Case Study
Pink Ladies
Pink Ladies
A newly formed girls’ group hoped to get to know each other well and do something together. Since there were six of them, they spent considerable time negotiating their preferred activity. Working closely as a team, each member showed how they would like to try new things. Finally, they agreed that planning a trip to Flamingo Land would fulfil all the objectives they’d hope to achieve!
Because none of them had experience in planning and organising anything like this before, this challenge didn’t come easy to the Pink Ladies.
They started well by firstly talking to facilitators and the management about their ideas. Then they carried on researching the internet for: admission fees; means of transportation; cost of petrol needed for the journey; activities that they could do on the way there; food for lunch; and of course, the rides they’d like to try at Flamingo Land!
It was no easy job at all! They considered all of the financial quotations they had sourced, performing all of the calculations to make sure that their £250 Keyfund Stage 1 funds could cover everyone’s expenses. Chelsea and Sam told the panel: “We realised we needed £21 more. We went through the maths again and found we really need that. So we spoke to the managers and talked them through what we’d done. At the end, they were happy to donate £21 towards our trip!”
The trip to Flamingo Land went really well, all of them enjoyed it because they went as a team. They also did some team building exercises on the day and had a lot of fun. One of them said that the bit she liked least about the trip was when they had to leave because “it was really good”.
Karren the facilitator said, “Keyfund gave them the opportunity to work together on a shared goal that they all wanted to achieve. These young people took on responsibility to prepare their own packed lunches at Choysez the day before the trip, planned the route to Flamingo Land, arranged meeting points throughout the day and got there on time, looked out for less confident members in the group and took turns choosing rides so everyone had the chance to try the rides they wanted to get on.”
It’s quite clear that the Pink Ladies developed the 12 Keyfund skills - especially in communication, searching for information and dealing with people in power and authority! Kerry, their assistant facilitator, told us: “Using Keyfund has helped the young people realise what skills they have developed”.
Building on their fantastic Keyfund experience, some of the Pink Ladies have now gone back into full-time education.
