CultureShock

The Steering Group

Young people at the heart of the CultureShock Festival

The CultureShock steering group was formed in 2010 after a residential event to set up an active festival working group made up of young people from across North Yorkshire. The group began to think about how they could develop and influence CultureShock to enhance the festival for their peers. The group has evolved over the last 2 years to incorporate more young people with a keen interest in the event.

Keyfund has provided a fantastic focus for the group and has encouraged the group to think creatively and realistically about how they can positively influence the event. Keyfund has encouraged the group to work as a team and work hard to produce ideas, applications and presentations to the panel.

‘Keyfund has provided the group with a focus to their work, they have thrived on the idea of raising funds to support their own creative ideas’ says Charlie Land, CYC Festival coordinator.

The steering group have successfully worked through all four stages of Keyfund developing many of the 12 Keyfund Skills.

Here is a break down of the things the CultureShock steering group have achieved:

Stage 1- the group decided to go for a meal to discuss their ideas of how to enhance CultureShock.

Stage 2 – The group used the funding they were awarded to hire 2 giant letters from ‘Hugh Jart’ a visual arts company based in Yorkshire. The letters were delivered to the festival site and an artist worked throughout the day with young people decorating the letters with their festival feedback. Check out the picture.

Stage 3 – For Stage 3 the group planed, designed and went on a planning residential to support the 2011 CultureShock festival. The group went to Filey to spend a weekend planning and designing the event.

Stage 4 – For the biggest and final stage, the group applied to buy and run a ‘Shed Stage’ at the festival as well as support the headline act. This allowed many up and coming young people who hadn’t quite made it on to the main stage to experience the thrill of performing live at a festival. The group were on hand to staff the Shed Stage and offer support to performers.

CultureShock was a huge success and the Steering Group helped to make sure young people were at the heart of it all.
