Affinity Sutton - Life Changing
Life Changing are a group of 4 young men who volunteer at Crystal Palace FC Foundation. Working with Facilitator Kieran Connelly, the group researched and costed up several options to see which would be the best use of money for their budget before choosing a trip to go ice-skating, followed up by a debriefing session at Nandos for four other youths in their local area. The boys were keen to do something that the other youths hadn’t had the opportunity to do, and hoped that the day out might help broaden their horizons and improve their social skills.
The group had never taken control of organising a whole project themselves and during the panel spoke of how this experience had empowered them to take on more projects in the future. They had considered the safety of the outing, completing a full risk assessment themselves, and had also planned the debrief session at Nandos to help them evaluate how they could improve on their planning skills for next time. Most of all, they said that the experience had improved their decision making and communication skills; and were proud that they not only had the chance to do something for their community, but that were also confident enough to be able to present their plans to a panel of strangers. The group were successful, receiving the £238 that they bid for, and will be progressing onto the next stage.
